09 - Bonus: Learning Norse Code (Waterford)

Learning Norse Code

(24 hours in Waterford, Ireland)

I mentioned in the road trip's blog that, despite our intent, (and B's wishes,) we only touched the city of Waterford, Ireland on the way from an unexpected coastal drive toward my home in Dublin.

But, as alluded to in the blog, I took the bus back to Waterford about two weeks after the road trip to make sure it was suitable for B. This was apparently not a consolation for her, but she's familiar enough with my insensitivity that she continues to tolerate it. She probably cleans the toilet with my toothbrush whilst I'm at work. Fortunately, she uses something minty!

While I haven't yet completed this blog, I did post some pictures of Waterford to my Flickr ("okay, Boomer") page. While there's more to come (specifically the Medieval Museum and Bishops Palace Museum,) the links are below for what I've posted thus far.

Also, I reviewed Waterford for a hotel reservation website who shall rename maneless. (I'm gonna get some mileage out of that pun!)  The slightly-edited content of that is a good start for this blog post, and between this post, the previous post about the area, and the pictures of Waterford City and the Irish Time Museum, you'll have a rough idea of what to expect if you're planning a trip there.

That content (edited slightly to be current and relevant here) starts now...

I've been to most coastal Irish cities at this point. I decided to get out of Dublin for the night and came to Waterford on fairly short notice. Perhaps it was the (rare) nice weather, but Waterford is now one of my favorite cities in Ireland and was the perfect place *for me* to spend ~24 hours!  It's a great walking city and compact enough that most attractions are reachable within a few minutes.

Note that I usually race around from the moment of arrival to the moment of leaving, so others might enjoy all that Waterford has to offer - King of The Vikings VR experience, the Time Museum, the Irish Wake museum, that silly crystal place (albeit with an impressive company store,) Constitution Square, the Medieval Museum, Bishops Palace Museum, the Silver Museum, the river bank, building murals, etc. - for two or three days. If you haven't already researched what's in the surrounding County Waterford and you have access to a car, you can check out some stuff I posted about before such as the quaint coast of Dungarvan, the nearby Ballyvoyle Tunnel, and the Copper Coast Geo-site and the beautiful shoreline nearby.

By the way, several of those museums can be seen for one ~15-euro pass, easily bought online the day of arrival (such as I did!) There might be even cheaper options; check before you go! I'm not a museum person, but even I enjoyed everything above.

I stayed at the Waterford Marina hotel which offered a great view of the river, albeit for 160 USD for my one night there. (Did I mention I decided to go with almost no notice? This was what was available!)

I'm sure I'll add some featured pictures to this as well as some more snarky verbiage that no one will ready. If you made it this far, let me know! I won't hold my breath lest I wind up ground into sand and part of someone's Waterford Crystal bidet!
